Looking For The Negative

We have individuals who come in and express a desire to improve themselves. They want strength, a sense of well-being, and better physical shape. We strive to help them achieve these goals, but they often create obstacles that hinder their success.

One major issue is that many don’t listen. We possess a wealth of knowledge and have seen success with others, yet clients tend to pick and choose what they want to believe. They might ask, “Why can’t I work out daily?” “Why do I need to stay hydrated?” “Are my calories too high?” or “How long did it take them?” These roadblocks can be detrimental to their progress. Remember, it takes multiple ingredients to bake a cake.

Another problem is that they listen to others—people who don’t have the necessary expertise. I frequently hear clients say that others have told them they’re paying too much, need to do more aerobics, or are consuming too many calories. When I find out who these so-called experts are, I ask the client, “Do you want to look like them? If so, you should let them train you.” The Bible makes a profound statement: “No man can serve two masters; he will cling to one and despise the other.”

Many clients grow impatient, asking how long it will take to see results and expressing frustration that their belly isn’t shrinking fast enough. I remind them that their belly isn’t the only area with excess fat. It didn’t take just a day to get out of shape, so it won’t take but a day to get back into shape. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day! If you truly want to improve and seek help from a trainer or doctor, listen to them and follow their instructions. Be cautious of the Facebook and YouTube “experts” who either provide misinformation or don’t practice what they preach.

Stop being your own roadblock by claiming you want change but lacking the drive to take action. I once had a client come in with her husband, passionately listing everything he needed to improve his health and appearance. He stayed silent while she went on and on about him. I then turned to her and said, “What about you? You’re not exactly the picture of good health yourself.” She was shocked and angry with my remark……. She listened and went on to drop from a size 14-16 to a size 2 and became a pro natural bodybuilder. What about you?
