Be The Light

You must carry passion when someone wants to be like you. Years ago, after my first transplant, I was invited to the Jane Pauley Show with my donor. We talked about transplantation and how good I felt. They came to my gym earlier, showing footage of me training and interviewing my donor and her husband. She shared how she went from a size 18 to a size 4, and during that time, she came to me and said, “I thought about seeing if I could donate a kidney to you.” I thought to myself, well, if he gets sick, and then I realized, you are sick. I want to see if I can donate.” We cried during that show.

Afterwards, I was talking to someone about a book in the making, and another transplant recipient turned to me and said, “I appreciate all that you’ve been through, and yes, you’ve been through way more than me. However, I, like you, had a transplant. If you really want to help me, help me be like you.” This was the biggest compliment I ever received. When you have something inside you—a light, a passion—it draws others to you in your profession. Do you have this light now? Many may not be drawn to the light; some creatures run from it, like a vampire 😂

Are you a passion that draws others?

Are you that doctor, trainer, therapist, friend, parent, coworker, or minister? Be the light.
