Today, I had an appointment at the VA Dental Clinic in Portland. After my appointment, I went to the common area where free coffee and snacks were offered. It’s common to see visitors wearing military ball caps to represent their service branches.
While I was there, a couple walked in; the wife was using a walker, so they moved slowly. I struck up a conversation with the husband while he checked in, and his wife looked for coffee. I brought over the basket of snacks so she could choose what she wanted and served her some coffee. We then sat down and talked for about 20 minutes, sharing many smiles and laughs.
During our conversation, the wife mentioned celebrating their 60th anniversary. As we wrapped up, I offered my hand for a handshake, and she surprised me by hugging me instead.
I am sharing this story to highlight how small acts of kindness can make a difference. A simple smile to an elderly person can greatly impact their day, and if we are fortunate, we will reach that same age someday. Time is too precious to spend feeling bitter or hateful without reason. We are all children of God, each with our faults. By sharing a little love—a smile, a handshake, or a hug—we can brighten someone’s day, improve our well-being, and contribute to making the world a better place.
After I left the clinic, I went to breakfast at the Kopper Kettle restaurant in Topsham. After finishing my meal, I went to pay, and the server said, “No charge.” Thank you, Cassie and Elise.
